Welcome to the website of the Defending Democracy and Human Rights initiative, started within a project implemented by MEDIA DIALOGUE / Y4M (Germany) and CIVIL – Center for Freedom (North Macedonia). This website is a work in progress and will evolve into a comprehensive public resource, featuring findings, analyses, and policy recommendations. In the future, it will serve as a platform to connect experts, organizations, and media, fostering collaboration around ideas and actionable strategies to strengthen and defend democratic values and human rights on a global scale. It all started with the international conference “Defending Democracy and Human Rights in the Face of War, Nationalism, and Authoritarianism” brought together experts, policymakers, civil society leaders, and journalists from across Europe and beyond to address the most pressing challenges facing democracy today. Held on December 11-12, 2024 in Skopje, North Macedonia, the event provided a platform for in-depth discussions on the threats posed by war, the rise of nationalism, and the resurgence of authoritarian tendencies.

Over the course of the two-day event, more than 80 participants took part in panel discussions, workshops, and networking opportunities, exchanging insights and laying the foundation for developing concrete recommendations to strengthen democratic resilience and media freedom. Partner organizations committed to collaborating on a strategic policy document outlining sustainable actions for key actors and decision-making structures at regional and global levels.

The event was part of the NRW Human Rights Week, which features various formats on this critical topic. North Macedonia and North Rhine-Westphalia have been partner regions since 2021. ***
From Dialogue to Initiative
Defending Democracy International Initiative was established following the International Conference “Defending Democracy and Human Rights in the Face of War, Nationalism, and Authoritarianism”, as a direct response to the urgent need for stronger global cooperation in the face of mounting threats to democratic values. Defending Democracy International Initiative is a global platform led by civil society actors, aimed at strengthening democratic resilience and countering the rising threats of authoritarianism, hybrid warfare, and disinformation. Rooted in frontline experience and international solidarity, the Initiative brings together experts, journalists, human rights defenders, diplomats, and thought leaders committed to safeguarding democratic values and human rights in a time of global insecurity. It promotes dialogue, evidence-based advocacy, and policy action to confront the erosion of truth, freedom, and justice in war-affected and fragile democracies. 
With a strong record of action and international recognition, including efforts in exposing propaganda, supporting vulnerable communities, and fostering cross-border cooperation, the Initiative is an open call to governments, international organizations, and donors to invest in the long-term stability of democratic societies. ***
A Strategic Roadmap: The First Publication
As a strategic output of the International Conference, and the people gathered around the Defending Democracy International Initiative and the Initiative launched its first publication, Defending Democracy: A Strategic Roadmap for Countering Authoritarianism, Nationalism, and Disinformation.

First Actions: Westminster Alliance for Ukraine Programme
One of the first actions of the Defending Democracy International Initiative was its initiation of the Westminster Alliance for Ukraine Programme. Rooted in the shared commitment to support Ukraine and defend democratic values globally, this early action underscores the Initiative’s founding principles: solidarity, resistance to authoritarian aggression, and the defense of truth and human rights.
The Westminster Alliance provides a crucial platform for fostering ongoing international cooperation to strengthen Europe’s defense capabilities, support Ukraine’s defence capacities in its struggle for freedom and just peace, and contribute to its postwar reconstruction.
